Where ParCode started

ParCode began with a government barcode requirement.

In the early 1980s, a new government requirement meant every shipment needed a barcode. Most businesses couldn’t afford the equipment to print one. ParCode’s founder started the company in 1982 to help them meet the requirement, and early customers included government contractors. His son, Jason Aranowitz, runs ParCode today.

What goes on the tag

FieldWhy it is there
“Property of U.S. Government” or agency nameOwnership, readable without a scanner
Agency seal or logoSets government items apart from personal or contractor equipment
Sequential property numberLinks the item to its property record
Barcode (Code 39 or Code 128)Fast scans during the physical inventory
Data Matrix or QR codeWhen your scanners or your contract call for a 2D code
Office symbol or locationWho is accountable, and where the item should be
Matching tab numberThe receiving report, the property file, or the hand receipt
Contract numberTies contractor-held government property to its contract

Office symbols and location codes can print as text on the tag, or as a prefix in the number itself.

Accountable property · agencies, bureaus, and field offices

Government property tags that match the property record.

Every accountable item gets a number when it is received. Put that number on the item itself, and the wall-to-wall inventory becomes a scan, room by room.

The matching tabs on a 4-part tag carry the same number to the receiving report, the property file, and the excess report.

  • “Property of U.S. Government” or your agency name, with your seal or logo
  • Sequential numbers that pick up from your last tag, with your prefix and check digit
  • A 2-part tag with one matching tab, or a 4-part tag with three
  • Barcode, QR code, or Data Matrix, in the format your property system reads

IT & electronics

IT asset tags for laptops, phones, and servers, applied at imaging.

A tech refresh can stack pallets of the same laptop model in the staging area. Tags printed in number order go on as each unit is imaged, so the serial number and the tag number enter the record together. Servers and switches take tags from the same series.

  • 0.5″ × 1.5″ and 0.3″ × 1″ sizes for phones, tablets, and hotspots
  • Printed under a laminate that resists solvents and abrasion, for laptops that live in bags
  • ParVoid on laptops, where a tag lifted from a failed unit leaves VOID behind
  • QR or barcode, whichever your ITAM tool and scanners read

Sensitive and pilferable items

Tamper-evident property tags for sensitive items.

A tag that peels off cleanly can end up on a different item, and then the record points at the wrong one. Tamper-evident tags make that move visible, or stop the tag from coming off in one piece.

  • ParVoid, white or silver: VOID stays on the item and on the lifted tag
  • ParDestruct white vinyl: it breaks apart instead of peeling off whole
  • A separate prefix or stripe color for sensitive items below the capitalization threshold
  • Small sizes for cameras, GPS units, and handheld test equipment

Files & records

Barcode labels for folders, boxes, and the file room.

With a barcode on the folder or box, checking a file out or back in is one scan. Your records system logs who has it.

  • Pre-numbered barcode labels, with your office symbol or records series as a prefix
  • Shelf location labels that show where a box belongs
  • Year text or a stripe color to separate one year’s files from the next
  • Printers, label stock, and ribbon if your records system prints its own labels

Contractors · GFP and CAP

Tags for government-furnished and contractor-acquired property.

GFP and CAP can carry their own wording, number series, and stripe color, apart from the tags on your own equipment. If your contract names a marking requirement, send us the clause and a photo of any tag in use. We’ll tell you what we can produce.

Government contractors were among ParCode’s early customers.

  • “Property of U.S. Government” wording, with the contract number if you want it
  • Data Matrix on request, alone or beside a linear barcode
  • A separate series for each contract, if you hold more than one
  • A proof showing every field and the number format

How it works

An order can start from a photo of the current tag and your next open number.

1

Tell us what you're tagging

Counts by item type, your property number format, and the surfaces the tags go on.

2

We set the construction

Size, material, wording, and barcode type: Code 39, Code 128, QR, or Data Matrix. VOID or destructible vinyl for pilferable items.

3

You approve a proof

Nothing prints until the wording, the seal, and the numbering are right. Samples can go on real equipment first.

4

Delivered in number order

Printed in sequence from your starting number, so the next item you receive gets the next number.

FAQs

Questions property custodians and contractors ask

Do you accept purchase orders?

Yes. Choose Purchase Order at checkout and enter your PO number, or pay by card. Agency and contractor POs both work.

Is there a minimum order?

Yes, 250 tags online, from $122.50 with free shipping. Custom sizes, Data Matrix, and runs of more than 10,000 tags are quoted.

Can you continue our property numbers?

Yes. Mail us a current tag or send a photo, plus your next open number. We recreate the layout and continue the sequence, prefix and check digit included.

Can you print “Property of U.S. Government” and our seal?

Yes. The wording, your agency or bureau name, and your seal or logo go into the layout. You check every line on the proof.

Can a tag be moved to another item without it showing?

Not with ParVoid or ParDestruct. ParVoid leaves VOID on the item and on the lifted tag, and ParDestruct vinyl comes off only in small pieces.

Can the matching tab go on the receiving report?

Yes. A 2-part tag has one matching tab and a 4-part tag has three, each with the tag’s number.

Barcode, QR, or Data Matrix?

Code 39 or Code 128 if your property system and scanners read linear barcodes. QR when staff scan with phones. Data Matrix on request, when your system or contract calls for it.

Our contract has a marking clause. Can you print to it?

Include the clause when you ask for a quote, and we confirm what we can produce before you order.

What are the tags made of, for our purchase description?

ParPlus is 0.002 white or silver polyester, subsurface printed under a 0.001 laminate, with a 0.001 aggressive pressure-sensitive adhesive. ParVoid is 0.002 tamper-evident polyester with the same laminate, and ParDestruct is 0.002 destructible white vinyl.
